Finding out if you’re pregnant

finding out if youre pregnant

Home pregnancy tests are very reliable and will give you a result within a minute or two. The best time to take a pregnancy test is one week after you miss your period. This is because the tests look for hormones in your urine. It takes about two weeks for these hormones to show up. Make sure that you follow the instructions on the box as each test works differently.

You can get a pregnancy test from:

  • a pharmacy
  • a supermarket
  • your doctor or nurse
  • a midwife
  • a Family Planning clinic
  • your school health service
  • a sexual health clinic.

I am pregnant

Once you know you are pregnant you have the choice about what sort of care would suit you. You'll need to choose a lead maternity carer – a midwife, hospital team, obstetrician or family doctor who coordinates your care. Pregnancy is the perfect time to really look after yourself – your diet, exercise and lifestyle.

While thinking about physical health for you and your baby, remember how important your mental wellbeing is. Avoid unnecessary stress, ask for support and accept it if offered.
